It is no secret to anyone in my life that I don’t do TBRs very well. I add books to my list in the heat of excitement, but rarely do I follow through as I am an extreme mood reader, and TBR lists put a pressure on me that actually ends up driving me away from books.
Long story short, TBR lists absolutely ensure that I don’t read books in a timely fashion, and so I tend to keep the ones I really want to read off that list.
For that reason, I have not done a TBR post since January 2018. Yikes. However, I’ve noticed that I’m making a pretty good dent in my TBR lately, so I feel relatively secure making an official post about which books I am reading next: I won’t be surprised if my bad habits kick again and I end up reading none of these, but only time will tell, no?
So I guess here goes nothing??
*starts hyperventilating*
Firstly: Older books I want to tick off my TBR!
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
After years of snubbing this acclaimed book, it has finally made its way to the top of my TBR. Hurrah! I probably would’ve never taken this dive till my dying breath, but I’ve been so starved of good prose lately that I’ve resorted to ticking off any book with even remotely immersive writing in it. Weird way to choose a TBR, but it works.
The Last of the Wine by Mary Renault
Speaking of immersive writing, I am loving this one so far. Someone recommended it to me after seeing how much I loved The Song of Achilles, and it was a fortuitous recommend as I feel like it’s going to be a life-long favorite. Fingers crossed?
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
OOH, THIS COVER. It’s been over a year since I last read Sanderson, so I’m excited to read this one. I read a few chapters on my recent visit to Powell’s Bookstore, and I was surprised to see how quickly I became invested in it. Good start, good start…
King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
Yes, I’m a chicken. I was clucking on and on about this book for the longest time before it was released this January, yet I still haven’t mustered the courage to pick it up. I’m so afraid of being disappointed by it that I literally can’t even look at it.
Classic me.
Thankfully, many mixed reviews have helped temper my expectations for it, so bring it on–I shall conquer you disappointment!!!
Next: Most anticipated reads of 2019
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
Ahh…how beautiful does this book sound? I am obsessed with its title, premise, and (supposedly) beautiful prose, and it’s my most hyped read this year. It is also what’s finally motivating me to read The Night Circus by the same author, so there’s that.
Dead Voices by Katherine Arden
Something that most people might not know about me is that middle grade is one of my favorite genres, and this sequel is one I’m particularly excited about. I loved Small Spaces (as well as the Winternight trilogy), so I’m itching to read this.
Btw, I recommend Small Spaces if you haven’t read it yet; it’s creepy, but fun. 🙂
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Sigh, another one on the list by Leigh Bardugo? You bet! I have been following this author ever since her Six of Crows duology, so I am totally in for this. I mean, creepy secret societies at Yale, magical realism, plus likely good writing? Yasssss.
But that cover though…whose idea was it to make so snaky? *shudders*
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
This entry is one of the very few ARCs I requested on Netgalley this year. The stunning cover is what initially caught my eye, but the premise also sounded super magical with Mayan mythology at its forefront. Hopefully, I can track down a physical copy first since ebooks and me don’t mesh at all, and I’m raring to go right now. 😛
The Iron Season by Helene Wecker
Finally, this book. This book.
THIS BOOK.
I have been desperately awaiting this book since 2014 (srsly) as I’ve wept tears of blood each time the release date for it was pushed back. And as I am the biggest fan of The Golem and the Jinni, it’s needless to say that this long-awaited sequel is one I am drooling for. If the release date gets pushed back once again, I am cutting a bitch, trust me; I pretty much have no chill left at this point when it comes to this book. 😂
Lastly, books lurking (?) on the cusp of my TBR!
The Earthsea Cycle by Ursula Le Guin
As a casual fan of Triumphal Reads on Youtube, I recently decided to take this recommendation on board. He mentioned in passing that Ursula Le Guin has flowery prose, which if you know me, I eat that shit right up.
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett
I pulled this off my bookshelf yesterday, and I saw a receipt indicating a purchase date of May 2016, and I was like, what?! I’d been meaning to finish this book for a while, but that receipt actually shocked me. Time flies when you’re older I guess… *sobs bitterly*
(Re-reading) Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo
Okay fine, I probably sound like a Leigh Bardugo fantatic by now, but I swear that’s not the case. I rather disliked her Grisha trilogy, the Language of Thorns was enjoyable enough, but it’s only this duology that truly lights a fiery passion within me.
Because it’s the best YA series I’ve read in years. FIGHT ME BRUH.
So that’s the list. ❤
It’s strange to see how I’ve become so efficient at knocking down a large number of books nowadays, but I think that’s largely because I’ve stopped requesting ARCs. My Netgalley rating was a bit of a chore that kept me more discouraged than anything else, so I finally told myself, “Screw it, I’m going old-fashioned.”
Needless to say, making my own choices for my TBR really whet my appetite for reading again, so I’m feeling optimistic about all this. (Famous last words lol.)
Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed. Happy Wednesday!
I LOVED King of Scars and Skyward!! And one of my co-workers read Erin Morgenstern’s new book and said it was fantastic, so that’s a good sign 😄 I also can’t wait for Ninth House!! 😱 Good luck with reading all of these books!

Thank you! ❤ I can't wait to read KoS and Skyward, and whew, Starless Sea is soooo high on my anticipated reads, I've been hearing nothing but good things about it. 😀 Hopefully I can request an e-arc of it!

I loved the Night Circus, and I’m sososo excited for The Starless Sea! Erin Morgenstern is an auto-buy author, so I’m super excited that you’re going to read her works. ❤ And of course, Leigh Bardugo is AMAZEBALLS. I haven't read King of Scars yet either, but I can't wait for Ninth House anyway. 😊 Amazing post! Congrats on your roll with your TBR!

Thank you so much!! ❤ I can't wait to read Erin Morgerstern (I've heard so many great things about her), and YASSSS Leigh Bardugo is awesome. Ninth House is going to wreck my year for sure! 😂

I didn’t know Erin Morgenstern announced a new book! I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on that. Great list!

Exciting, right? I definitely should read Night Circus first, but I already feel so excited for Starless Sea. 😂 Thank you! ❤

I feel you on the whole TBR thing haha. YASSS The Night Circus!!! And The Starless Sea!!! I’m also terrified of being disappointed by King of Scars, how could anything ever top Six of Crows???

Haha that’s exactly what I was thinking when it came to King of Scars! I feel like Bardugo built the duology really nicely, but the mixed reviews both terrified and relieved me (in the sense that it lowered my expectations lol). I can’t wait for Ninth House though! I’m hearing that it’s going to be BOMB. 😋

Exactly, it’s be so hard to live up to Six of Crows! And YES it looks amazing!!!

I’m a mood reader too, so I’ve made a total one one TBR post on my blog. It’s just too stressful. Definitely pick up Good Omens ASAP because it’s really good.

Glad I’m not the only one! TBR lists are so stressful, and somewhat unnecessary considering I can just pick up whichever book I want. 😛 And you bet I will! I definitely want to get this off my TBR as it’s been on my shelf forever!

Oooh some noice choices here! I have finally purchased Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom and need to start them!

Gahhh, good luck! I’ve heard some people say Six of Crows has a slow start, so hopefully your expectations aren’t too high. 😁 I hope the read goes well whenever you get to ’em! ❤ ❤

I love your choices! And you shouldn’t feel bad about not doing any TBR posts because, girl, I never do them xD Like you I’m a big mood reader and unless I have a specific purpose to read a specific book (like an ARC sent by a publisher that is about to come out) I will probably not read it right away even though I’ve been hyping it for months.
So yeah, definitely feel your pain here xD There are some titles I’m not familiar with and I’ll definitely be looking into them after I’m done with this comment. But as for the others, they are some of my most anticipated reads EVER and yet I have yet to pick them up LOL Why are we like this?
I’m really excited for the Good Omens series coming out on Amazon Prime soon. It’s been a while since I’ve read the book but I remember enjoying it so really looking forward to it.
Great post! 🙂

Aww thank you, you’re sweet! I don’t know why we’re like this either; I seriously feel like I’m the most picky and sensitive reader in the world, so it’s reassuring to see I’m not the only one. Cuz like you, I never read my most hyped books until like, a year later at the earliest, and ARCs? What are ARCs? 😂 Those things never see the day of light with me, so that’s why I’m on a Netgalley hiatus.
Ooh yes, the Good Omens show is the main reason why I plucked my copy off my shelf btw! It was just sitting there forgotten, but a certain star-studded casting made me interested in finally reading it. 😉 Super excited for it!

I just started it the other day and only have a couple episodes left… I’m really sad to know it’ll end soon! It’s just been so enjoyable and even though I don’t remember much from the book, it’s been able to stir my memory a bit and it’s been a really cosy experience overall 🙂

*hands you a paper back* Ah, you do make me laugh!! 😀 A great list, I’ll be interested to know what you have to say about The Night Circus, I loved this book so so much when I first read it. I’m almost afraid to give it a reread in case it’s not as good as I remember.
And man, Good Omens. I’ve had a copy of that book since I was 16 and I STILL haven’t read it!! (that’s, like, 23 years ago … *faints*). I hope that makes you feel a little better? 😀 😀

*takes it* Thank you so much! I myself am a bit nervous about reading Night Circus because I HAVE heard some people say that it’s not perfect upon re-read, but I’ll be sure to go in with an open mind. Can’t wait for my copy to arrive from the library!
Oh my goodness, that IS a long time! (And haha yes, it does me feel better. Sorry 😆) Thankfully, I am halfway through Good Omens right now, and quite enjoying it! It’s even more encouraging to hear that there’s a recent adaptation that people are raving about, so I’m just rushing to finish this book so I can check the show out! 🤗

The show does look awesome! David Tennant as a demon? I’m there for THAT!! 😀

I finished the show yesterday, and David Tennant absolutely nailed his role! His portrayal of the demon from the book was spot-on if I must say so. 😉 Btw if you aren’t rushed to start the book, I might suggest the show first; I find it a surprisingly beat-for-beat adaptation (give or take), and I think it’s a case where it’ll be better to watching it before reading. (jmo of course haha)

TBRs are more of a friendly suggestion to me than anything else. I have a tendency to never read the books I say I’m going to read at the time I say I’m going to read them. The Night Circus, King of Scars, and Skywards are all on my TBR, two of which are currently collecting dust on my shelf! I’ve also been wanting to reread the Six of Crows duology because those are by far some of the best YA I’ve read in my entire life! I wish I could go back and read them again for the first time!

Exactly! TBRs are just there to remind me of the books that I had once committed to read, but they will not see the light of day until like, three years later. 😆 I am currently traveling though, so I’ve brought The Night Circus with me so I wouldn’t have any choice but to finally read it. Oh, and I’ve just finished SoC! It’s been 3 years since I last read it, so it’s ALMOST like reading it for the first time; there are so many fun little details Leigh Bardugo slips into that book, it’s why I also consider it the best YA series ever. 😉

Have to say, ’tis a good list of books! So, no pressure or anything but I totally look forward to your thoughts on most of them because my TBR depends on it 😀 hahaha… kidding, well, no, not really… ahem…
I hope they’re all going to be super enjoyable 🙂

I don’t do TBRs very well either! I mean, how do you exactly decide which book to read when? Because I can’t! So many books on your list are on mine as well! Who’s to say when I’ll read them?! The Golem and the Jinni, The night circus, The book thief have been on my TBR for so long but just couldn’t get to read them!
I’ve never heard The last of the wine but isn’t its name just enough to make you read it?!

I KNOW RIGHT?!?! I’m such a mood reader, I literally don’t know which book I’ll read until like, five minutes before I pluck it off my bookshelf. It’s such a pain in the butt. 😭😭
Ooh, those books you mentioned are lovely! I personally think you’d quite enjoy Golem and the Jinni (it’s very historical fiction despite the huge fantasy elements, so it explores social issues from back in the day), Night Circus is very atmospheric, and Book Thief is just really emotional. ❤️ You picked some really great ones to read!
Same, I’d never of Last of the Wine either until someone recommended it to me, but Mary Renault was apparently the Madeline Miller equivalent from back in the day! (as in, she did a lot of mythology retellings that were very character-driven)

Oh curious to hear what you think about night circus. Skyward was *amazing*- I was hooked right away as well- hope you like it! haha I’m totally chicken about king of scars as well. I’m really anticipating ninth house too. the cover for Gods of shade and shadow has got my attention too 😉 Good omens was hilarious- hope you like it. I feel the same way about bardugo’s books as well- the six of crows duology is the best of her books for sure!!
