2019 Mid-year Freakout Tag! (a.k.a. making up for my laziness last year)

Long time no see blogosophere citizens! I was poked last year by another blogger to do this tag, but in typical “me” fashion, I forgot to publish my answers on time. Hahh. Can’t say this is the first time (nor the last), but I really must do a better job of chugging out my posts on time; being so slow makes me anxious at all the shite in my drafts section!

That being said, I’m on vacation right now, and so on (unannounced) semi-hiatus. Thus, I am blasting this tag out into the world before I ooze further off the web. It’s really just an excuse to finally catch up on some posts, but I’ll be taking it, thank you very much. 😉

So without further ado, let’s jump into this bad boy!

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ YET IN 2019

31114367

Not to ride that hype train, but The Night Circus truly is one of a kind. It is not perfect by any means (the finale had potential to be much more satisfying in my opinion), but I honestly cannot stop thinking about it–the writing is heavenly.

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2019

51w+2hnifnl._sx309_bo1,204,203,200_

The only new sequel I’ve read this year is The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden. Best installment in the trilogy, solidified the series as one of my all-time favorites. ❤

22299763

I also re-read Crooked Kingdom. (Bow down to Leigh Bardugo, ye peasants!)

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO

41219451

Tentatively, The Descendants of the Crane by Joan He. I keep hearing via word of mouth that this book is surprisingly nuanced, so I’m eager to see if it lives up to the hype. (And it better be; I’m picky about my YA nowadays, so this dare not let me down!)

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

44415228

Dead Voices, the sequel to Small Spaces by Katherine Arden. I’ve heard that this is even more spooky than the last, so I’m strangely dying to read it? Not to mention, Katherine Arden is an auto-read author for me, so there’s that. *Edit: Finished it! It was fun. :)*

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

41150487

*groans* Look I’m sorry ya’ll, but I really can’t with this one. I picked it up when I was in a reading slump as it promised a good enemies-to-lovers romance trope, but not only did it fail to deliver on that front, the dialogue was trying so hard to be hip and edgy and relevant that I was legit gnashing my teeth together in attempts not to cringe.

So yeah, hate this book. 🙂 Another one of my verrry popular opinions I’m sure.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

31915219.jpg

Easy, A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge. I went in with relatively high expectations after hearing that this author is underrated, yet even then I was floored. From prose, to originality, to world-building, to political intrigue, I don’t think I have read something so weird yet enjoyable in years, so this is definitely an author I’m keeping an eye on.

FAVOURITE NEW AUTHOR

41LUZ0JrYuL

Besides Frances Hardinge, I am adding Erin Morgenstern to my list of auto-read authors. (I can’t believe I waited so long to read The Night Circus! I’m so skeptical of hype, whyyy).

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

WHTF_JKT_2p.indd

Allistair from We Hunt The Flame. Mind you, I am not recommending this book since I nearly listed it as my most disappointing read of 2019, but I haven’t read many books this year that has hotties in it, so here we are: Allistair has a flirty sense of humor, some angst, a good intrigue, and most importantly, a hot bod (probably).

NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER

31915219.jpg

A minor character, sure, but The Grand Steward from A Face of Glass made me super jazzed at one point in the book. He is revealed to have separated his left and right brains from working cooperatively, so one side of his body sleeps while the other side tries to upstage the other…though they’re literally the same person! What a wild premise. 👌👌👌

42730332

For my favorite protagonist though, Zachary from The Starless Sea probably takes the cake. There is nothing that particularly “wows” me about him, but he has a likable demeanor with just the right amount of wit and snark to give him some pizazz.

“Is this the Starless Sea?”
“No, this is only a Harbor,” comes the answer. “And as I have already mentioned, it is closed.”
“Maybe you should put up a sign,” Zachary says before he can bite his tongue and the statement earns him a more withering glance than any of his math teachers ever have managed and he mumbles an apology.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

692969

Props to The Road to Avalon by Joan Wolf for being the only new book to squeeze a few tears out of me. This is a romance-driven Arthurian retelling that reads relatively modern, so it was quite easy to relate to its characters and their woes.

11887641

I also am re-reading The Song of Achilles. What does it say about me that I’m weeping already and it’s only chapter two? 🤔 (Answer: That I’m a total and utter sap.)

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

Mr Willowby’s Christmas Tree is a picture book that brings me pure joy (it’s so cute!), Small Spaces by Katherine Arden is a creepy MG book that is super fun, and lastly, the Tsubasa Chronicles is a manga I re-read for the first time in a decade, which made me happy because I was finally able to figure out what that weird finale meant. 😂

FAVOURITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION

386282

Good Omens. I watched the show after reading the book, and it is surprisingly faithful? The two main leads have incredible chemistry (it’s exactly how I imagined it from the books), and though it’s tad extra for my taste, it’s ineffably cheeky. 😉

FAVOURITE POST YOU HAVE DONE THIS YEAR

Hmm, either my review for The Kingkiller Chronicles or An Ember in the Ashes. It is always really cathartic for me to gather the balls to finally publish my unpopular book reviews, and oh boy were these bookish opinions unpopular. 😂 Still, catharsis!

MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR

25532530

I’ve bought only 5 books this year as I’m trying to downsize, but this cover of Uprooted by Naomi Novik is too orgasmically beautiful not to buy.

WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR

Roughly this lot? To be real though, don’t know, don’t care; any time I feel like I need to read a book, I won’t, so I try not to have a set TBR. 😉 *Edit: About to start City of Brass!*

So those are my answers!

I have been on and off blogging due to mental exhaustion, so apologies if you don’t see me popping in often. I’ve been too busy sleeping in, devouring food, reading a lot of books, marathoning movies (namely Lord of the Rings), and falling over my feet playing badminton, so I haven’t had much time for blogging.

I’ll come oozing back as always though, so until then, happy July. 😎

  1. Hold on, Small Spaces is getting a sequel?? Sign me up! Everyone has been telling me to read SS for a long time, and if anything gets me to read something, it’s a sequel! 😂 I think I’ll read both of them in October, closer to Halloween 🎃 I also need to read The Night Circus, The Starless Sea, and almost everything else you just mentioned. I’ll get to them eventually!

Have a great time on your vacation! And have an awesome July!

    1. Yes!!! Small Spaces is MG, but it’s super fun, written by the awesome Katherine Arden, and you can just have a chill time with it. And yes, it is perfect for Halloween, so I’d totally recommend doing just that. 😉

And thanks girl, I will! Have a terrific July yourself! ❤

    1. Thank you, I’m glad to be of assistance! 😉 And yes, it really is far away. Thankfully, I was lucky to have a friend who collects arcs, and she gave me her copy so I could read it via physical copy first. Super enjoyed it!

  2. Ahhhhh you’ve posted! Oh my gosh! 🤗 I love all your answers! I haven’t read Descendant of the Crane yet either, but I’ve heard so many incredible things about it. I will be crushed if it doesn’t live up to my expectations. Haha! I seriously need to read the Night Circus soon, and yes to Crooked Kingdom! Leigh Bardugo never disappoints! 💕

    1. For heaven’s sake, sorry for the late reply! Your comment was sitting in my spam section, which I have no idea why the filters work like that. (Judging you, WordPress!)

Anyway, thanks girl!! ❤ I am super looking forward to Descendants, and I too will be crushed if it doesn't live up! 😉

  3. Enjoy your holiday! The picture with the kitty made me giggle because that’s just so spot on.

I’m really glad you enjoyed The Night Circus and Uprooted because you know I love those books, I still have to read Six of Crows and The Girl in the Tower though and still hope to do this year.

I can’t believe you managed to read The Starless Sea, so jealous! But here’s a trade off…. heaven in the TV show Good Omens was filmed in the business park where I work 😉

    1. Hehe I love the artist for it because she does a lot of similar ones that made me laugh! 😀

Ohhh yes, those were fabulous reads, and I largely ticked ’em off my TBR because I heard you really liked ’em. (Thank you for the push, I’d never have gotten over the hype otherwise!)

I was super lucky to have a friend who snagged a copy of Starless Sea and send it to me to read first! It saved me the trouble of having to resort to Netgalley because I legit cannot do it with ebooks haha.

Wow, that’s so freaking cool!!! 😍😍😍 Were you able to see them actually filming, or were you able to match up scenes from the show to the location?

      1. Ah you are welcome! I’m pleased you enjoyed some books I recommended!

It is pretty freaking cool but sadly I only found out about it after the fact! I found an article about filming locations and it referred to a business park in my area and suddenly I had a moment and looked at the TV show stills and then had a proper moment!! Then I found another article that actually confirmed the exact building and was just gutted that I didn’t know about it at the time. They kept it very quiet and probably filmed at weekends as it’s a really busy business park!
Still, I can sort of say that I work in heaven…

    1. They are, aren’t they? 😍 Masterpieces in their own right!

And I think your review of Descendant of the Crane was one of the ones that pushed me to put it on my TBR! I love me some political fantasy, so for sure it’s one I’m checking out! ❤

  4. Oh my god, you read so many interesting books this year! Bravo! I’ve been a little hesitant to pick up Red, White and Royal Blue because of the hype and I’m afraid to be disappointed…we’ll see 🤷🏾‍♀️☺️

    1. Thank you! And haha I am in the eensy-weeny minority when it comes to hating Red, White, and Royal Blue, so don’t worry! I am sure you will enjoy it; I’m always the one who’s got that unpopular opinion. 😛

  5. The writing in Night Circus is just magical, oh my lord. I’m so excited to read the Starless Sea by Erin! Great book choices, I couldn’t help but add them all to my TBR! I’m such a sap, so I guess I’ll be crying though Song of Achilles when I read it (preferably at home😂) Also, A Face Like Glass sounds super interesting; I just placed it on hold in my library. Loved reading your answers!

Hope you’re having a great vacation!!

    1. Ohhh yes, Night Circus was one hell of an experience – and Starless Sea is similarly magical! If you liked Night Circus, you will definitely enjoy the latter I think!

Hehe I am very excited for you to read The Song of Achilles. Like dang, that book makes ME into a weeping sap. 😂 Definitely a smart move to read it at home for sure!

Yasss, A Face Like Glass! This book is most definitely middle-grade, but I hope that you can find enjoyment in it regardless! I mean, I wish I’d read this author when I was a kid, she’s just that imaginative!

And thank you so much! I surely am! ❤️❤️

  6. Ooo I never saw that cover for Uprooted– it’s such a beauty!! I want to hang that on my wall😍
And whaat I didn’t know that Erin Morgenstern wrote another book!

Also love the cover for The Girl in the Tower… I never heard of the series, but definitely will be checking that out (I’m such a sucker for aesthetic covers😆).

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I honestly believe that cover of Uprooted is the prettiest I’ve seen – such unique colors and design! ❤

Yasssss, Erin Morgenstern has struck again! The Starless Sea is coming in the fall, and you should totally read it!

Ohhhh you definitely need to read Bear and the Nightingale then. The covers for that trilogy is what caught my eye too, but DAMN, the writing is just beautiful. 😁

  7. Hope you’re enjoying your holiday! Glad you liked Night Circus- the writing really is beautiful. Loved girl in the tower (and the whole series!) really want to read descendent of the crane and small spaces! Such a shame about red white and royal blue- I had high hopes (tbh still want to read it, but I’ll try to lower my expectations, cos that sort of thing can really bug me). Song of Achilles made me cry too. Loved the good omens as well!! Uprooted does have a lovely cover 😀 Awesome answers!

  8. well, fudge. I totally need to start making time to Morgenstein… Some interesting books here though, definitely quite a few I have on my tbr pile as well so I’ll race ya to ,,,, the tbr pile? 😀 haha…
anywho, totally levelled with you on needing balls to publish unpopular opinions, I’m working on one such review just now, it’s not the fact that I’m afraid of being verbally lynched by fans, it’s the worry I am being too bloody sarcastic and disrespectful towards the author as opposed to the book so I have like a million revisions making sure I I remain …well, respectful and yet it’s hard to tamper down the frustration and make sure honesty isn’t dismissed… hmm 🙂

  9. I spy some of my favourites on here – The Song of Achilles, The Girl in the Tower (wasn’t this such a good trilogy?), Good Omens – and some that I need to read (Uprooted, Leigh Bardugo, Descendant of the Crane). I have to admit though that the final third or so of The Night Circus really disappointed me after I was so engrossed in the amazing story till then. I am still interested in reading The Starless Sea though. I’m also in the mood for Arthurian stories (courtesy bingeing Merlin last year), so will check out The Road to Avalon.

PS. I love your website redesign! Especially all the quotes at the very bottom 🙂
